DEQUINCY - The Rayne High Wolves claimed their first win of the 2015 football season Friday and did it in a big way as they rang up a 48-26 total over the DeQuincy High Tigers.
Leading the Wolf pack Friday was running back Trent Winbush who made his way into the endzone five times for the majority of Rayne’s points. He had six carries for 99 yards and three rushing touchdowns, while his only catch of the night was a nine-yard touchdown run.
On defense, Winbush also shined with a pick-six from a DeQuincy pass near mid-field for a Rayne score, his fifth score of the night.
“Needless to say, our offense played much better tonight,” stated Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware following Friday’s win. “Not only did Trent (Winbush) play a good game, but everyone picked it up a notch on both sides.”
Ware then commended his team’s effort. “They played hard like they always do, win or lose. But tonight we played throughout the entire game, instead of up and down.”
As in previous games this season, the Wolves lit up the scoreboard first and early on in the game.
In the beginning of both the first and second quarters, Winbush scored from 20 and 11 yards out for his first two touchdowns of the night. Extra points were booted by Ben Alverez for a 14-0 Rayne lead mid-way through the second quarter.
That’s when things got interesting with a five-time scoring second quarter by both squads.
The Tigers answered in the second quarter with back to back rushing and passing touchdowns. Neither conversions were scored and Rayne still held a slim 14-12 lead.
As the clock ticked down to the half, Deontrey Wilridge and Darien Harmon combined for a Rayne drive, setting up Winbush for his third score of the game, this one from 37 yards out. An Alverez extra point extended Rayne’s lead to 21-12 with seconds remaining in the first half of play. But, that’s all the time Rayne needed.
On the kickoff, DeQuincy fumbled the football and Rayne gained possession near mid-field. Following a run by short rush by Wilridge and a long quarterback scramble by Jaylon Reed to the nine yard line, Winbush punched it in once again. Alverez’s extra point split the uprights as the clock wound down to complete the first half of play.
DeQuincy came out in the second half and scored on their opening drive for a 28-18 score.
But, Rayne answered with a scoring drive of their own with Darien Harmon and Winbush setting up a five-yard TD run by Wilridge. A two-point attempt fell short and Rayne held a 34-18 lead mid-way through the third quarter.
On DeQuincy’s very next drive, they took to the air where Winbush was at the right place at the right time, nabbing an interception and pick-six for his final score of the night. The extra point by Alverez put the Wolves up 41-18 heading into the final quarter of play.
The final touchdown for the Wolves was a Reed pass to Devonte Robinson for a 22-yard touchdown completion. Alverez posted his sixth extra point and Rayne held a 48-18 lead.
Coach Ware subbed in his junior varsity players where needed to complete the game just prior to a DeQuincy touchdown and safety for the 48-26 finale.
“We cut down on mistakes tonight,” noted Ware of his team’s offensive play. “We just have to continue working hard in practice and continue to improve while keeping everyone healthy.”
Joining Winbush in Rayne’s running game was Deontrey Wilridge who led the Wolves with 18 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. Darien Harmon added 97 yards on nine carries. Reed tacked on 39 yards, while Brant Broussard had nine, six by Cameron Gibson, and Zach Fontenot with three.
In the air for the Wolves, Reed collected 119 yards on six completions to Robinson (3-for-87), Harmon (2-for-22) and Winbush (1-for-9).
Holding their own on defense and allowing DeQuincy very few big plays were a number of defensive Rayne leaders, including Brant Broussard (8), Nicky Faucheaux (7.5), Tony Gabriel )6.5), Cameron Gibson (5.5), Trent Winbush (5), Darien Harmon (5), Richard Breaux (4.5), Austin Coleman (3.5), Carl Lewis (3.5), Donald Doucet (2.5), Devonte Robinson (2.5), Jude Mire (2) and DJ Stelly (1).
Rayne will travel to Eunice on Friday where they will take on the Bobcats before beginning their district slate. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
“I’m looking forward to next week,” commented Ware of the upcoming Eunice game. “It’s always a good game when we meet them.”
