Wolves, Ladies in district diamond action
Both the Wolves and Ladies were able to slip in a weekend tournament and weekly games as the spring rains have decreased.
Wolves
Over the weekend, the Wolves traveled to the New Orleans area for the Dennis Estay Memorial Baseball Tournament hosted by John Curtis and Holy Cross.
In opening action, Rayne couln’t stop a Holy Cross’s seventh inning rally in a 5-4 loss.
With the score tied at 2-all in the second, Holy Cross slapped in a run for a slight 3-2 lead. Both teams crossed the plate in the fourth inning for a continued 4-3 Holy Cross lead.
A repeat one-run gain by both teams in the fina inng saw Holy Cross take the 5-4 win.
Rayne’s TJ Bearb got a hit in each of his two at bats (single, triple), with the following Wolves adding hits: Gannon Quebedeaux (single), Brice Meche (2 singles), Hunter Keely (single), Grant Abshire (single, RBI), and Ivy Thibodeaux (RBI sac).
In their second game of the tournament, Rayne pounded out eight hits and took advantage of five Northshore errors to pick up an 8-4 win.
The Wolves got off to a fast start on the very first pitch of the game as TJ Bearb smacked a double to center field. Two batters later he touched home on a single by Hunter Keely for a 1-0 Rayne lead.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun. But, that was short-lived.
Wolf Hunter Keely led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored two batters later on a single by Gannon Quebodeaux. The Wolves plated two more in the inning, taking advantage of a Panther error, to jump out to a Rayne 4-1 lead.
Northshore’s offense answered in the next inning with two doubles and a couple errors by a usual stingy defense.
With the game tied at 4-all, Rayne quickly responded the following inning as Ivy Thibodeaux walked and was brought home by Grant Abshire, who doubled deep to left center. The Wolves re-took the lead at 5-4.
After both pitchers served up scoreless innings, another error hurt the Panthers in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and only one out, Northshore was looking for the double play to end the inning. Quebodeaux hit a grounder, but a throwing error resulted in two more runs crossing the plate. Next up, Brice Meche popped out to right field, but Trey Bearb was able to tag and score from third.
The three-run seventh was enough as the Wolves hung on for the 8-4 victory.
The Wolves are scheduled to travel to Lake Charles this week to meet Washington-Marion, followed by a home game on Thursday when they host LaGrange, followed by the Rayne High Invitational this weekend at Gossen Memorial Park in Rayne.
LADY WOLVES
The Lady Wolves finally hosted a home game on Monday when they handed Crowley High a 5-1 district loss.
The Crowley offense was halted by a commanding show on the mound for Rayne’s Kelcie Bourgeois who threw 10 strikeouts while allowing only one hit.
Gabrielle Peltier put herself in scoring position with three extra-base hits and two RBI’s for the Lady Wolves. She doubled in the second, third and fifth innings, totaling three of Rayne’s six hits on the day.
Adding to the Rayne stats were Cecily Schexnyder (double, RBI), MaKenzie Meche (single, RBI) and Ashley Thibodeaux (RBI).
During the weekend’s St. Amant Tournament, the Lady Wolves picked up two wins as they prepare for district action.
In opening tournament play, Rayne slid by St. Charles 9-8 in extra inning play.
Lady Wolves and St. Charles combined for 17 runs and saw six lead changes with Rayne eventually taking the win on an eighth inning play. Lady Wolves scored on an RBI single by Kelcie Bourgeois bringing home Brooke Moore for the win.
The teams combined for 20 hits, including three extra base hits. Leading Rayne bats was Whitney Fontenot who racked up three RBIs on three hits. She tripled in the first inning and singled in the third and seventh innings.

Even though Bourgeois allowed seven runs over five innings she still recorded the victory. Bourgeois struck out six, walked three and gave up seven hits.
In their second outting of the tournament, Rayne had another close call by sliding by Central LaFourche, 7-6.
A Cecily Schexnyder RBI double, bringing home McKenzie Meche, gave the Lady Wolves the lead in the sixth inning, enough for the Lady Wolves to hang on the one-point win.
Schexnyder had two extra-base hits for Rayne as she doubled in the fifth and sixth innings.
Also swinging away with multiple hits were Whitney Fontenot and Katie Benoit, while Blair Bergeron and McKenzie Meche added a hit each fr the win.
