Wolves open season with 33-6 win over Blue Jays

EUNICE - Rayne High opened their 2014 football season Friday on the road at St. Edmund High School where the Wolves handed the Blue Jays a 33-2 loss.

"When our guys can accumulate that many yards during a game, I'm pretty happy with that," stated Wolf head coach Curt Ware following Rayne opening win. "Our offensedid what we asked and the score showed that."

For the win, the Rayne High offense put up over 500 yards on the night, 144 of those in the air by first-year, sophomore quarterback Jaylon Reed. He was 10-for-16 on the night and found four receivers for three touchdowns.

Bringing down those passes were Trevon Fontenot (7-for-105 yards), John Michael Besse (1-for-16 yards), Byron Mouton (1-for-15 yards) and Deontrey Wilridge (1-for-8 yards).

"We're looking at a young offense that can give us both a passing game and runners who can give us yards on the ground," Ware contunued. "They are showing improvement and look forward to only get better as the season progresses."

Reed and the Rayne offense hit the board early on midway in the first quarter as he found Trevon Fontenot for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was fumbled and the score stood at 6-0 for the Wolves.

That’s when Rayne’s footrace began with Byron Mouton hitting the Wolf sideline for a long 64-yard touchdown run. The extra point by Wyatt Ramsey placed the Wolves up 13-0 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter was limited to one score, a 15-yard touchdown pass to Mouton partnered with an extra point by Ramsey for a 20-0 Rayne lead as both teams headed into the halftime break.

The Blue Jays got on the board with their only score of the night late in the third quarter as quarterback Drew Brunet set up a two-yard TD run by Zach LaFleur. An attempted two-point conversion failed and the Wolves held a 20-6 lead headed into the final quarter of play.

The final quarter brought about a rushing touchdown by John Michael Besse and a TD pass from Reed to Deontrey Wilridge to close out the 33-6 final score and Rayne win.

John Michael Besse led the running game Friday as he made 19 carries for 232 yards and one touchdown, followed by Deontrey Wilridge (15-for-96 yards), Byron Mouton (8-for-88 yards), Jaquan Cormier (1-for-7 yards) and Trent Win bush (1-for-4 yards).

"They (St. Edmund) have a real good quarterback and he worked his offense," noted Ware when observing his defense. "But, our defense showed some improvement from last week and held them when we needed to. With this conditions, I think both teams just tired out as the game went on," referring to the extreme humid conditions during the contest.

Defensively on the night, Donavon Cormier led the Wolves with six solo tackles and seven assists, followed by teammates Haven Doucet, TJ Bearb, Trevon Fontenot, Richard Breaux, Cameron Gibson, Devonte Robinson, Austin Coleman, Donald Doucet, Brice Meche, Desmond Cole, Trent Winbush, Antonio Gabrielle, Javon Cormier and Jake Richard.

The Wolves will host their first game of the new season Friday when North Vermilion will make the trip to Wolf Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
