Church Point holds off Iowa
IOWA – The Church Point Bears scored late and then held off an Iowa rally to grab a 35-27 win over the Yellow Jackets Thursday night.
The Bears grabbed an early lead in the first quarter when Kylance Castille scored from four yards out.
Alex Higginbotham’s extra point gave Church Point a 7-0 advantage with 9:51 left in the period.
At the 6:13 mark of the second period, the Bears pushed ahead 13-0 when Frederick Williams scored on a seven-yard run but the PAT failed.
Iowa closed the gap to 13-7 when quarterback Zack Jongbloed scoerd on a two-yard run and Jedd Self added the extra point with 3:26 left in the half.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game 13-13 with 8:52 left in the third period when Jongbloed connected with Cole Flemming for a 15-yard scoring strike.
Church Point retook the lead on a 32-yard pass from Trey Babineaux to Collin Latiolais with 6;25 left in the third quarter.
Troy Matte found Wiliams open for the two-point conversion as the Bears led 21-13.
A ball snapped out of the end zone resulted in a safety as the Bears held a 23-13 advantage with 5:00 left in the game.
Church Point’s Babineaux then scored on a 55-yard kickoff return to push the Bears ahead 29-13 with 4:45 remaining.
Iowa responded with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Jongbloed to Fleming to close the gap to 29-19 with 1:08 left in the game.
The Bears answered with a 57-yard run by Williams with 44 seconds left.
The extra point was blocked but Church Point held a 35-19 advantage.
Jongbloed scored with 11 seconds remaining on a 15-yard run.
He then connected with Fleming for the two-point conversion to close the final margin to 35-27.
Jongbloed completed 12-of-19 passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
Fleming had six catches for 127 yards and a score.
Williams finished with 141 yards on 12 carries with two scores to lead the Bears’ 250-yard rushing performance.
Castille added 45 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
Matte completed 7-of-10 passes for 134 yards.
Babineaux had three receptions for 70 yards.
Church Point travels to Kaplan this week before its first home game against Jennings on Sept. 25.
