Gents, Pios log playoff victories
WEST MONROE - Jon Riley Mouton and Pate Broussard combined for five hits and five RBI Friday to lead the Crowley Gents to a 6-2 victory over No. 8 seeded West Ouachita in the first game of their best-of-three series at the Chiefs' home field.
With the victory, the Gents were one victory away from advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Class 4A playoffs.
The Gents took on the Chief's in the second game of the series on Saturday, but results of that contest were unavailable at press time.
Mouton provided an RBI single in the second inning to give the Gents an early lead. Broussard also had an RBI single in the frame and Alex Ashby scored on a sacrifice to give the visitors an early 3-0 lead.
Two more runs crossed the pate in the fourth inning on a pair of RBI singles by Mouton and Broussard and another crossed the plate when Mouton doubled to left in the fifth.
The Chiefs got a pair of runs in the sixth on two hits, including a leadoff home run.
Haden Erbe picked up the victory after allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. He struck out six in seven innings.
Mouton and Ashby each had three hits in the victory while Broussard and Austin Duhon each had two. Will Doughty and Bubba Daigle each had a single.
Pios top Pine Prairie
CROWLEY - The Notre Dame Pios pounded out nine hits Friday evening in a 14-2 run-rule victory over Pine Prairie in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs at Miller Stadium.
The Pios scored five runs in the opening frame and added nine more in the fourth to end the game by virtue of the mercy rule.
Taylor Faulk and Waylon Bourgepos each drove in a pair of runs in the opening frame while Jacob Vicknair brought home the final run of the frame on a ground out.
Faulk,who had two hits, drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning and Brad Stoma added a two-run double. Two runs scored on one of Pine Praire’s four errors, Nick Hanks added a two-run home run and Joe Faulk had an RBI single in the nine-run outburst.
Joe Faulk earned the victory on the mound after surrendering two runs on five hits and one walk. He struck out four in five innings.
The Pios will travel to LaPlace to take on St. Charles in the second round next week.
