North Vermilion hands Notre Dame its first district loss

LAFAYETTE – With the bases loaded and no one out in the top of the first inning, the Notre Dame Pioneers had a chance to take control of their contest against North Vermilion Sunday afternoon at Tigue Moore Field.
But the Pios failed to seize the early momentum and the Patriots, sparked by an inning-ending double play to end the threat, made it look easy afterward in cruising to a shocking 10-0 run rule victory over the Pios.
“We had the bases loaded with no body out in the top of the first and we kind of just had some mistakes that cost us,” said ND coach Steve Soper. “That was a chance to really get ahead and get them (North Vermilion) uncomfortable early; and we just let it slip away from us.”
The opportunities were few and far between the rest of the way for the Pios.
With ace Donald Comeaux, a Louisiana/Lafayette signee, on the mound, the Patriots were nearly flawless in the field. They turned three more double plays over the final five innings to thwart any potential rally by the Pios.
“The Comeaux kid threw exceptionally well and kind of took it right to us and we just had no answer for it,” said Soper of Comeaux, who limited the Pios to just four hits. “Anything that we had going just got stopped in a hurry with the double plays. You know, it was just one of those days.”
Nick Hanks, Jacques Thibodeaux, Joe Faulk and Jacob Vicknair each had one hit for the Pios.
The Pios gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning on two walks and a wild pitch.
The Patriots then got going in the second frame with three straight two-out hits, including a two-run single by Seth Patin and a two-run double by Ty Desormeaux that pushed the lead to 5-0.
Connor Dupuy added a bases-loaded triple in the third inning and Chance Carrier ended the game in the sixth inning with a two-run single.
“It all comes down to taking advantage of missed opportunities and they took advantage of every miscue that we had,” said Soper.
The Pios wil take on North Vermilion again today at Miller Stadium. First pitch for that contest is set for 4 p.m.
