Notre Dame's Theriot logs career victory No. 300

BATON ROUGE – Notre Dame Lady Pios’ basketball coach Nolan Theriot reached a coaching milestone over the weekend, but  he isn’t taking full credit for the achievement.
The Lady Pios’ 61-38 semifinal victory over Madison Prep on Saturday provided Theriot with his 300th victory and put him in elite company.
The Lady Pios went on to defeat Glenn Oaks, 80-24, in claiming the championship of the Parkview Tournament and adding yet another victory to Theriot’s resumé.
“I think that this is just more of a testament to the kids that I have coached over the last 15 years,” said Theriot. “You’re talking about averaging 20 wins a season when you’re only playing 30 (games). That’s a pretty good testament to them, so I’ve been blessed to have good coaches and our kids have always worked hard and believed in the system and what we’re trying to do.
“Obviously, you’re always pleased with something like this, but it’s not about me as much as it is about kids.”
Nearly half of Theriot’s victories were earned when he was coaching at Catholic High of New Iberia. The other half have been as the head coach at Notre Dame.
“When you have a program, like ours, that hasn’t won a title, I think that this is another added thing to it that shows that the program has been good and it has been good for a little while now,” said Theriot. “But it (300 victories) is over now. It’s 301 and we’re moving on to what matters.”
The Lady Pios placed four players in double figures in the semifinal game. Madelyn LeJeune poured in 15 points, Alex Miller added 13 and Sam Lyons and Hanna Esthay each followed with 12 points, Gabbie Romero had five while Elise LeBeouf and Hunter LeBlanc rounded out the scoring with two points each.
In their victory against Glenn Oaks, 80-24,  Romero and Sam Lyons each pitched in 18 points and LeJeune added 13. LeBeouf followed with 12 points, Esthay had 11, LeBlanc scored six and Annie Matthews finished with two.
The Lady Pios will be in action again this evening when they travel to Lafayette to take on Class 4A’s St. Thomas More at 5:15 p.m.
