Playoff Roundup: Rayne, Iota advance to regional round
MARRERO – No. 22 seed Rayne pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the early postseason Tuesday.
The Lady Wolves (15-9) banged out 12 hits and upended No. 11 seed Academy of Our Lady, 10-6, to advance to the Class 4A regional round.
The Lady Wolves will now play host to No. 6 Lutcher Saturday at 4 p.m.
“Our hitting was great today,” said RHS coach Natalie Travasus. “We produced timely hits when we needed them, resulting in runs.”
The Lady Wolves plated four runs in the first inning courtesy of a three-run double by Kristin Gaspard and an RBI double by Cecily Schexnyder.
McKenzie Meche singled and scored on an error in the second inning before Blair Bergeron blasted a two-run home run in the third.
Schexnyder added a two-run double in the sixth before crossing the plate herself on an error to close out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
“We played as a team and we had each others back from the first pitch to the last,” said Travasus.
Bergeron led the Lady Wolves at the plate with three hits and two RBI while Gaspard and Schexnyder each had two hits and three RBI. Whitney Fontenot, Kaitlyn Ledoux, Katie Benoit, Kelcie Bourgeois and Meche each had one hit on the day.
Bourgeois picked up the victory in the circle after surrendering six runs, four earned, on seven hits and six walks. She struck out 10 in seven innings.
Armand powers Lady
Dogs past Westlake
IOTA – All season long, teams have tried to avoid McKenzie Armand’s power by intentionally walking her.
Westlake opted to go against the grain and pitch to her Tuesday in the Lady Rams’ Class 3A playoff opener at Iota.
Big mistake.
Armand made the Lady Rams pay in a big way by going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in the Lady Dogs’ 15-4 victory.
The Lady Dogs (23-4) will now play host to Jena (20-6) in a regional contest Friday at 5 p.m.
The Lady Rams took a 3-2 advantage in the second inning and the game was tied at 4-4 heading into the fourth.
The Lady Dogs took over from there.
Armand hit a three-run bomb in the fourth and added a two-run double in her second at bat of the frame to spark an 11-run inning that saw 14 Lady Dogs come to the plate.
Sarah Johnson added a two-run home run in the frame.
Ladies fall short
at Bastrop
BASTROP – The Crowley High Ladies surrendered three home runs and that proved to be the deciding factor in a 9-6 loss to Bastrop in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs Tuesday.
The Ladies (16-15) took a 4-3 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-run double by Kristen Bonin and a two-run triple by Skylor Huval.
But Bastrop responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame and then added another run to regain the lead at 6-4.
Bastrop added another run in the third inning and hit another two-run bomb in the fourth.
Maddie LeBouef hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Taylor Grabowski recorded a sacrifice fly in the seventh to account for Crowley’s final two runs.
Huval, LeBouef, Bonin, Katelyn Killmer, Chadlyn Yokum and La’Shonda Delco each had one hit for the Ladies on the day.
Church Point upsets
No. 14 Albany
The No. 19-seeded Church Point Lady Bears cruised past No. 14 seed Albany, 14-2, on the road Tuesday to advance to the regional round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The Lady Bears will entertain No. 3 Brusly Friday at 5 p.m.
