Prep Roundup: Johnson powers Pios past West St. Mary
CROWLEY – Notre Dame’s Claiton Johnson has had big games before.
But Tuesday night, he had his best game yet.
Johnson poured in a career-high 33 points, 17 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Pios to a 65-54 victory over West St. Mary in the District 6-3A opener for both teams.
“Claiton really had a super game for us,” said ND coach Donald Adams, whose team improved to 8-13 overall and 1-0 in league play. “He just took over in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter.”
Johnson and the Pios trailed 45-42 entering the final frame before he exploded for 17 points as the Pios went on a 23-9 run.
“Everyone came out ready to play tonight,” said Adams. “We put four good quarters together and everyone really gave their all. Everybody played their role and contributed.”
Ethan Smith added 11 points and 10 rebounds; Simar followed with seven points and Hunter Meche scored six. Joe Stringfellow contributed five points, Alex Thomas had two and David Gonzalez had one.
South Beauregard holds off Iota
LONGVILLE – South Beauregard’s Hayden Gunter poured in 19 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to power the Knights to a 71-49 victory over Iota Tuesday night.
The Knights improved to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in District 4-3A play. Iota fell to 13-8 and 0-2.
“We just didn’t execute a lot of things right tonight,” said IHS coach Stacy Bertrand. “We didn’t do what we needed to do to win, especially here.”
The Dogs hung in with the hosts and trailed by just four (44-40) late in the third quarter.
South Beauregard pulled away from there, however.
The Knights went on a 27-9 in the last 10 minutes of the game to seal the victory.
Bray Latiolais had the hot hand for the Dogs with 24 points. He was followed by Triston Fontenot with 10 points; Landon LeJeune, 8; Garrett Reppond, 4 and Kade Hebet, 3.
Wolves slip past Gents
RAYNE – The Rayne Wolves muscled out to an early lead and held off a late rally by Crowley to slip away with a 72-61 victory Tuesday evening.
The Wolves improved to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in district. Crowley fell to 8-12 and 0-5.
Byron Mouton paced the Wolves with 23 points while Charles Jones and Drakkar Broussard each had 15.
Quanterral Robinson was the leading scorer for the Gents with 15 points. Perry Myles and Tiron Foreman each hit double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Jacq’Co Price added eight points in the loss, Alkwan Wesby scored five, Tyrin Daniels and Chris Osten each had four and Paul Goodley had two.
Lady Pios cruise past West St. Mary
CROWLEY – The Notre Dame Lady Pios improved to 13-7 overall and 3-0 in District 6-3A play Tuesday with a 36-12 thrashing of West St. Mary at A.B. Dore Gym.
The Lady Pios took a 24-8 lead at the half before pulling back in the final two frames.
West St. Mary was outscored 12-4 in the second half.
Madelyn LeJeune and Hanna Esthay led the Lady Pios with 15 and eight points, respectively. Catherine Gonzalez followed with five points, Melise Gossen had four and Elise LeBeouf and Alyssa Williams each scored two.
Lady Wolves unbeaten in league play
RAYNE – The Rayne Lady Wolves scored 26 points in the first quarter and never looked back in a 67-36 victory over Crowley Tuesday.
The Lady Wolves improved to 17-6 overall and 6-0 in District 4-4A. Crowley fell to 8-12 and 2-4.
Charlesha Dugas scored 23 points in the victory while Whitley Landry had 13.
The CHS Ladies were led by Myah Rogers and Jailyn Smith with eight points each. Nykeila Winters followed with seven points, Chelsea Yokum and Tionne Breaux each scored four, Taylor Dapremont had three and Hannah Hart had two.
