Just a few months ago, the Lady Wolves Volleyball Team was enjoying a district title and a trip to the state tournament.
Turn the clock ahead to the 2016 season and one can see the difference a season makes. With the loss of her entire starting six, Rayne High Head Coach Stephanie Garrett has a very young and inexperienced team in a very competitive district.
“At the varsity level, we are a very inexperienced team,” stated Garrett of her young squad. “They need a little confidence and a couple wins to get them on track.”
Despite dropping their opening matches, Garrett thinks her team can continue to improve.
“They are great kids, but they need to be a little more aggressive on the court and little more focused on all the aspects of the game. That will come with experience.”
On a personal note, Garrett stated, “I have been pre-occupied with my dad for the past several months and I have not put in the time I would like to with them. But, hopefully now I will have the time to spend with them.
Rayne opened their regular season with a three-set loss to Acadiana, 17-25, 16-25, 16-25. Collecting kills were Kennedie Bourgeois, Whitney Comeaux, Mary Jenkins, Destiny Alleman, Tajane Butler, while Comeaux and Butler led with assists.
The Lady Wolves hit he road on Sept. 6th where they faced Catholic High of New Iberia, handing Rayne a four-set loss, 17-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-25. Alleman recorded led with three kills, Mary Jenkins and Madison Lavergne covered digs, and Butler and Lindsey Batten led assists.
In a loss to Teurlings on Sept. 7th, Butler led in kills, Natalie Alleman, Jenkins and Lavergne recorded multiple digs, and Comeaux and Butler led assists once again. Peyton Richard and Comeaux led with aces at service.
The Lady Wolves will travel to Lafayette today (Thursday) where they will face Northside.
