Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office hits drug dealers in early morning raid

By: Howell Dennis
In the early morning hours Friday, 15 suspected drug dealers got a rude awakening as the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office’s Operation Naughty List’ got underway.

According to Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon, his narcotic task force assisted by his patrol division, probation and parole, Iota Police Department and the Church Point Police Department began the operation armed with 23 warrants on 20 defendants from Crowley, Iota, Church Point, Rayne and Morse. Charges range from distribution of marijuana to distribution of crack cocaine and oxycodone.

“These officers don’t do this for the money,” said Melancon. “They do it because they love their job which is to protect the citizens of Acadia Parish and rid the streets of dangerous narcotics.”

Several members of the task force wore Santa caps during the raids including one that had ‘Po Po Po’ written on it. However, the homes they visited didn’t welcome them with milk and cookies.

One man tried to flee and was quickly apprehended by a quick thinking officer who stopped the man by approaching him in a firing stance. The man quickly surrendered thinking he had a gun pulled on him. While the officer was in his stance, he was holding no weapon.
