In an effort to help end homelessness and make young people aware of the homeless problem faced by students their own age, Rayne High School’s National Honor Society, HOSA, and Student Council organizations joined forces and took part in a fundraiser to raise money for homelessness awareness.

The event, known as “Sleep-in-a-Box,” saw 34 Rayne High students from Rayne High School and 16 Student Council members from Crowley High School join forces at the Rayne High School stadium on Thursday, Dec. 19, where they “lived” from 8 p.m. that evening until the beginning of the school day on Friday, Dec. 20.

For the night, students were only allowed to bring a box to sleep in, along with a pillow and blanket. Students played games throughout the night, in addition to roasting marshmallows and hotdogs using a firepit. They  then settled down in their boxes to sleep. Some students were faced with the reality of staying up all night.

Students were awaken at 6 a.m. Friday morning for breakfast, including biscuits donated by Popeyes of Rayne. Students then changed into school clothes and attended school the next day.

In order to participate in the project, students were required to make a donation towards the program. The event raised approximately $700 with all proceeds donated to Faith House as annoucned by faculty sponsor Megan David.
