PENNIES FOR PATIENTS FUNDRAISER - Central Rayne Kindergarten students joined with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to raise money through a Pennies for Patients drive. Each class set a goal to raise $40 by collecting spare change. All classes exceeded their goal with the school collecting a total of $1,180.90. Among the students of Adrienne LeJeune’s class (top collector in the school) joining Principal Christy Higginbotham for the presentation were, from left, Kelly Lustro, Martralon Yokum, Jeremy Senegal and Jaelyn Morris.

Members of the Rayne HIgh School Student Council who attended the 2013-2014 State Student Council Convention in Metarie were, kneeling from left, Natalie Alleman, Sidney Fontenot and sponsor Norellie Fontenot; standing, Drake Louis, Evan Whatley and Evan Alleman. The group was presented a plaque for their fundraising project with proceeds benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and named to the ”Mega Bucks Club” as they raised over $1,000 for the project. The students also participated in the essay contests, Mardi Gras mask contest and photography contest. Natalie Alleman and Evan Alleman presented a workshop to other schools during one of the break-out sessions, and Sidney Fontenot helped direct a district workshop. Sponsor Norellie Fontenot was honored as a “Past Advisor of the Year” and “Hall of Fame” recipient.

The Jindal family has dedicated one wall of the Governor’s Mansion to Louisiana children’s artwork. Every month a new group of artwork is displayed to pay tribute to our state’s young artists. Central Rayne Kindergarten student Gabrielle Hawkins recently visited the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge with her family to view her artwork which was on display the entire month of February. Gabrielle’s drawing depicts her version of happiness and love through her colorful flowers and hearts. It was drawn last school year when she was a pre-k student in Mrs. Angie Bourgeois’s class. Gabrielle’s parents are Thadius and Ashley Hawkins.

GUESTS WELCOMED TO CAMPUS - Students, faculty and staff members at Rayne Catholic Elementary welcomed over 100 visitors to their campus on Thursday, Feb. 20, during a Leadership Symposium held for the Leader In Me learning program. CENTRAL RECEIVES GRANT - Central Rayne Kindergarten was recently awarded the Innovation in Education Grant which allowed for the purchase of an Active Table. The grant is funded through the Pugh Family Foundation and Community Foundation of Acadiana. The grant was written by Christy Higginbotham, principal, and Adrienne LeJeune, classroom teacher, and totaled $3,500. The Active Table has a 46-inch full HD LCD display which allows up to six learners to simultaneously use individual tools, web browsers and resources as their personal efforts move the group toward accomplishing a common goal. ActivTable activities are aligned to common core standards and provides for differentiated instruction. On February 18, 2014, Central Rayne Kindergarten was honored with a visit from Nick and Nan Pugh, founders of the Pugh Family Foundation, who viewed the Active Table being utilized by students in Kelly Nero’s class. Taking part were, from left, Adrienne LeJeune, Nan and Nick Pugh, Christy Higginbotham, Dominique Wilson, Ebony Dupont, and Saylr Mouton.
