Donald Currier honored at Amite Game
AMITE – The most successful coach in Amite Warriors Football History returned to the hollowed grounds last week as the school paid tribute to the man who was responsible for bringing the Warriors three state championships.
Prior to the Warriors game against the Albany Hornets Coach Currier was presented a plaque from current Coach Alden Foster and Principal Mike Stant for his loyalty and dedication to the Amite High School Football Program.
Coach Currier, who also played for the Warriors back in his high school days, led the Warriors to three state titles during his tenure as head coach of the Warriors. “Not many people accomplish what Coach Currier did,” said Warriors Coach Alden Foster.
Currier took over as head coach of the Warriors in 1992 and coached the Warriors for fourteen seasons. Currier guided the Warriors to nine district titles from 1992 to 2005 and he guided the Warriors to the state playoffs in each of his fourteen seasons as well.
But what separated Currier from other coaches was his ability to win the big ones. Currier won three Class 3A State Titles in fourteen seasons beginning with his first title in 1994 when the Warriors beat St. James for their second title in school history.
Currier came right back and led Amite to their third state title in school history when the Warriors blew out Edna Karr in 1999 and then his final state title gave Amite four overall when Amite beat Notre Dame for the Title in 2004.
“We needed to honor coach Currier and now it’s time for him to be in the LHSAA Hall of Fame,” said Foster.
