Guidry family to gather Aug. 6

Les Guédry d’Asteur, the family association of all descendents of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas from Old Acadia, will hold its next meeting in Galliano, on Saturday, August 6, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the South Lafourche Parish Library; 16241 East Main Street (LA 308); Galliano, LA.  This is just behind the Burger King at the Galliano bridge.

The large Guédry family is found throughout the United States, Canada and even into Europe.  Over the years the original Guédry surname has evolved into several variations including Guidry, Guedry, Gaidry, Guildry, Geddry, Jeddry, Labine and LaBean.  Despite these changes, we remain one family and have family reunions every few years in the U.S. and Canada.  In Louisiana we are primarily Guidry, Guedry and Gaidry.

In 1999, over 60 Acadian families, including the Guidry’s, held reunions in southern Louisiana during the 2nd Congrès Mondial Acadien (World Acadian Congress), a worldwide assembly of Acadians.  The Guidry family is planning its next reunion during the Grand Réveil Acadien (Great Acadian Awakening), which will take place 7-16 October 2011 across southern Louisiana.

At its meeting on August 6, the family will finalize plans for the Guédry Reunion being held at the Cut Off Youth Center in Cut Off, LA on October 8, 2011.

Members will also learn about other events the family will have during mid-October including a Swamp Tour and an Historical Acadian Tour.

Martin Guidry, president of Les Guédry d’Asteur, will present an audiovisual presentation on the history of the Guédry family in Acadia and Louisiana.

The meeting is free and open to anyone with an interest in the Guédry (Guidry, Guedry, Gaidry) family.   Whether you are an avid family historian or just interested in learning a bit more about your family, come on out and visit with the Guidry family, hear about its reunion plans and enjoy the presentation.  A special invitation is extended to all of the many South Lafourche Guidry’s to attend and show visiting cousins that Lafourche hospitality and strong family ties.
