Area high school students compete in DAR Good Citizen Contest

The Acadia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution hosted the essay portion of the state DAR Good Citizen Contest at the Crowley home of Jo-Anne Arnaud on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The participating students are seniors at area high schools and were selected on the basis of their leadership skills (including personality, self-control and ability to assume responsibility), dependability (including truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality), service (including cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others) and patriotism (including unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation).

The selection process began with the faculty at each high school nominating three students who were then voted on by their fellow seniors to receive the honor of School Good Citizen.

Each winner was presented with a pen and certificate and now has the chance to compete for the state title.

The essay portion of the contest is intended to encourage the students to have a deepened appreciation for America’s heritage. The subject of the essay is not given to the students prior to the contest.
