Laureate Mu hears ‘Killing Reagan’ review

Members of Laureate Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Nancy Tislow on Sept. 6.
Following the opening ritual and Pledge of Allegiance, hostess Tislow discussed the book “Killing Reagan” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, an account of the career of President Ronald Reagan that tells the story of his rise to power and the forces of evil that conspired to bring him down. The authors go back to the golden days of Hollywood, up through the years in the California governor’s mansion and finally to the White House, where Reagan presided over boom years and the fall of the Iron Curtain.
Highlighting the review was the description of John Hinckley’s assassination attempt after the president had been in office only two months. His recovery seemed remarkable, but Reagan was grievously injured and he was forced to encounter a challenge that few men ever face. In “Killing Reagan” the authors take readers behind the scenes, creating an unforgettable portrait of a great man operating in violent times.
In correspondence from International, Secretary Phyllis Triggs reported that she had received the secretary’s packet. Service Chairman Gloria Stutes collected dishwashing detergent for the soup kitchen and asked members to bring paper towels to the next meeting.
The chapter birthday will be celebrated at the October meeting, which will be held at the home of Elsie Rowell. Members were reminded to bring gifts for their secret sisters.
Cultural Chairman Connie Jaubert discussed plans for the group to travel to Lafayette’s Paul and Lulu Hilliard Art Museum on Sept. 15 to view the current exhibits.
President Shirley Griffin showed the group a book that she had purchased for the Acadia Parish Library to honor the memory of former member Shirley Kilgore.
The hostess served refreshments to those present, including Griffin, Jaubert, Rowell, Stutes and Triggs.
