The month of April should be a great one for The Gallery, as it will be the site of Brandon Faulk’s latest exhibition, “Eye of the Artist”
The show, which is being presented by the Crowley Art Association, will open with a wine and cheese gala event Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., and, as always, the event is free and open to the public.
Faulk, who started out life in Crowley, is a resident of Indian Bayou. His demeanor is thoughtful, and peaceful, as is most of his artwork, which nevertheless seems somehow analytical in nature.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to categorize Faulk’s work. Some might call it surreal. Others might call it, quite appropriately, fantastical or ethereal. One thing it is not, though, is boring.
Viewers of the “Eye of the Artist” show will find themselves immersed in a world saturated with vibrant color and overflowing with imagination. It is easy to lose oneself in a daydream when completely surrounded by Faulk’s work.
According to Faulk, his art is driven by his imagination, and it is readily apparent that reality does not play a big role in Faulk’s paintings.
Rather, Faulk takes reality and tweaks it. He revels in the idea of being able to create something new purely for the sake of creating, to begin with a blank canvas and end, for example, with a landscape no one has ever seen before, that didn’t exist until he picked up his paintbrush.
Although this is Faulk’s second show at The Gallery, his current proffering is fresh and new, so viewers should not be afraid of stale artwork.
“The Eye of the Artist” includes 29 works, 19 of which are acrylic paintings on canvas. The remaining ten are hanging “tapestries.”
There is no particular theme running through the show. However, it does seem that the majority of the paintings are of the dream-like landscapes inspired by Faulk’s imagination.
Faulk has been painting for about 18 years and won Best of Show in last year’s Rice Capital Juried Art Competition. His talent is undeniable and his show should not be missed.
The Gallery is located at 222 N. Parkerson Ave. in Crowley. For more information call 783-3747.
