Gents split doubleheader with Westminster

CROWLEY – The Crowley Gents took advantage of a number of walks and a handful of errors Monday to down Westminster, 6-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at Miller Stadium.
Unfortunately, the Gents suffered through the same misfortunes in the second game by walking 16 batters in five innings en route to a 16-8 loss to the Crusaders in the nightcap.
Both games were five inning contests.
In the first game, the Gents struck first courtesy of four straight walks in the opening frame. Andre Larry drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate the first run and Brett Hebert brought home on run on a bases loaded ground out to give the locals a 2-0 advantage.
Ben  Broussard, the Gents’ starting pitcher, sat the Crusaders down in order for the second straight inning before his team tacked on three more runs in the second frame.
Broussard doubled down the left field line to start the second frame but his courtesy runner was picked off for a quick out. Then, following back-to-back walks to Austin Duhon and Jon Riley Mouton, Hayden Erbe delivered a two-run triple to right field. Erbe would later score on a two out error to push the lead to 5-0.
The Crusaders finally got on the board in the third inning thanks to two hits and a pair of CHS errors.
The Gents answered with a run in the bottom of the third when Joe Sylvester  singled and scored on a single by Duhon.
Sylvester pitched the final two frames in relief and gave up one run on three hits.
Broussard was credited with the victory after surrendering two runs, both unearned, on two hits. He struck out one.
Broussard, Erbe, Larry, Hebert, Duhon and Sylvester each had one hit in the victory.
In the second and final game of the night, the Gents got off to a good start by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning.
Jared Stelly singled to center field to drive in the first run following back-to-back walks to Blayne Sonnier and Hebert. Duhon then followed with an RBI single to center.
The Crusaders responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame without a single hit. The Gents committed a pair of errors in the inning and gave up three free passes - two walks and one hit batter.
The Gents were able to tie the game in the top of the third inning when Edwin Lewis reached base on a walk and scored on a double by Sylvester.
The wheels fell off for the Gents after that, however.
Westminster sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and scored seven runs on three hits, five walks and one error.
Trailing 10-3, the Gents rallied for five runs in the fourth inning on five his and four walks. Duhon, Mouton and Hebert each had RBI singles in the frame while Wyatt Stelly and Christian Breaux each plated a run on a pair of bases loaded walks.
The Crusaders put the game away in the bottom of the inning by scoring six more runs on one hit, six walks and one error.
The Gents used three pitchers in the final frame, the third being Sylvester, who entered with one out and struck out the next two batters.
In all, the Gents threw seven pitchers in the contest and gave up 16 runs on 16 walks and just four hits.
Offensively, the Gents had nine hits. Duhon led the charge with two hits and two RBI while Hebert, Mouton, Sylvester and Jarred Stelly each had one hit and one RBI. Erbe, Larry and Darrid Romero each had one hit while Wyatt Stelly picked up an RBI.
Crowley’s game against Notre Dame that was originally scheduled for today has been postponed. The Gents will return to action on Monday when they play host to Iota at 6:30 p.m.
Pios’ game ends in tie
VILLE PLATTE –  A busted water pipe flooded the field and threatened to cancel the game but Notre Dame and Sacred Heart were still able to get in a pair of summer league contests Monday afternoon.
In a abbreviated jayvee game, the Pios reeled off a 3-1 victory before the two varsity teams played to a 7-7 tie in seven innings.
Jacques Thibodeaux led the Pios in the varsity game with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate that included an RBI double. Sam Hoffpauir was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and Bryant Thevis had a two-run triple.
Notre Dame will return to action on Saturday when they play two games at Rayne’s Legion Field. The Pios will take on Livonia at 2 p.m.. and Rayne at 4.
