Hospice of Acadiana institutes ‘Pet Peace of Mind’ services

Beginning August 2, Hospice of Acadiana will begin a new program entitled “Pet Peace of Mind,” that will allow hospice volunteers to expand the amount of care given to the patient to their pets as well.
Hospice of Acadiana has received a $5,000 grant from Banfield Charitable Trust to begin the program.
In order to supplement this new program, Hospice of Acadiana will be having a pet supply drive on July 25 from 8-11 a.m. members of the community to donate dog and cat food, chew toys (no rawhides), pet carriers, leashes, and any other pet supplies that they would be willing to donate.
Pet Peace of Mind is designed to help assist both the hospice patient and their family members who may be caring for the pet. We can provide an extra hand to help care for the pet. This program ensures the family’s animals are not neglected.
Our pet volunteers may also help out with arranging for pet placement after the patient has passed away, should there be a need. We have relationships with local rescue groups, pet day cares, and veterinarians who will help find a happy home for the pet.
Whether they are furry, feathered, or finned, pets will get the same kind of loving care that they have always been given with the Help of Hospice of Acadiana’s pet Volunteers.
Some of the services that will be performed by hospice volunteers will be:
• Arranging for pet placement if needed, after the patient passes;
• Funding emergency pet boarding;
• Providing pet food for those in need;
• Scheduling veterinarian appointments;
• Transporting the pet to the veterinarian or groomer; and
• Walking the dog, changing kitty litter
