Blue Jays dismantle Bulldogs

EUNICE – There wasn't much to hang a hat on after Iota versus St. Edmund.
It's hard to find much after St. Edmund dismantled Iota Friday night by a score of 42-6.
“We're getting beat on the basics – effort, tackling, execution on offense, that's what we're getting beat on,” said Iota coach Neal Legé. “You work all week on something and then you come out here and lose your mind.”
There were moments Friday night, but each one of those moments was shrouded in bad quickly following. In all, it led to Iota on the bad end of a shut out for most of the night and dropping to 0-2 on the year. Meanwhile St. Edmund picked up its first win of the year and moved back to .500 at 1-1.
And it all began falling apart in the first quarter.
After St. Edmund saw a promising drive stall out after a penalty, Iota faced a similar fate on the following series. Staring down fourth-and-17, Iota lined up to punt deep from its own territory. A bad snap led to a hastily delivered punt which St. Edmund blocked and the Blue Jays set up shop at the Iota 26. It didn't take long (five plays) for the Blue Jays to cross the goal line on quarterback Drew Brown's feet from 12 yards out with 4:01 remaining.
“We had chances,” said Legé.
The blocked punt and subsequent drive was just the spark St. Edmund needed. Still reeling from its Week One loss to the Rayne Wolves, the Blue Jays' found its way onto the scoreboard and earned its first lead of the season. It would not relinquish that lead and would grow it at an alarming rate.
The second Blue Jays touchdown quickly followed.
On another 5 yard drive, St. Edmund crossed the end zone one more, this time via a 40-yard pass from Brown to Alex Hunt. The second touchdown came in at 11:16 remaining in the second. About
The wheels were now off the bus and the Blue Jays would begin scoring at will.
St. Edmund took the 20 points lead and just continued to watch it grows.
The touchdown in the opening seconds of the second was actually the first of three straight possessions for the Blue Jays that led to touchdowns.
The next score came off the heels of an Iota turnover, a fumble at the Iota 45 yard line.
It was another missed opportunity for the Bulldogs and, instead, it was a 45-yard bomb from Brown to Drake Brunet; Brown then passed the ball to Ross LaFleur for the two-point conversion.. The numbers would now creeping upward for Iota, which took a 20-0 deficit into the half.
Things didn't improve much as the third and fourth quarters for Iota either and even as St. Edmund began moving slower than its frantic, no huddle pace, the Blue Jays were able to put 22 more points on the board before Iota scored once.
The third quarter saw two of St. Edmund's scores. The first came in with 9:25 to go when Drew Brown's 9 yard pass to Cullen Brown. It capped off a seven play, 60 yard drive. Cullen Brown also caught the two point conversion pass.
Four minutes and 31 seconds later, St. Edmund broke the plane again. The eight play drive concluded when LaFleur ran in from a yard out. He would then add the two point conversion rush himself.
By the fourth quarter, both teams had submitted to allowing younger Bulldogs and Blue Jays, respectively, get some playing time. Both squads made the most of it with the Blue Jays scoring a touchdown with 4:26 remaining, a 33 yard run by William Chachere, which concluded St. Edmund's scoring for the night.
Finally, for Iota, the zero under Visitors left the scoreboard with 1:31 remaining in the game. The Bulldogs put together a 45 yard drive that took seven plays and netted Iota six points. It would be freshman Tristian Miller running for seven yards and his first touchdown for the Bulldogs that would conclude the drive.
Leading Iota in rushing for the night was Adam Ardoin with 13 carries for 100 yards and Miller who had seven carries for 41 yards and a touchdown. Miller also spent the entire second half under center and went 2-8 for 2 yards total. He also threw an interception. Starting quarterback Tim Lunson went 3-6 with an interception and 31 yards. The leading receiver for the Dogs was Michael Miers who caught a 22-yard screamer in the game.
