Midland Rebels slip past Elizabeth

MIDLAND – Dylan Boudreaux was not much of a factor for the better part of three quarters Tuesday in Midland’s home contest against the Elizabeth Bulldogs.
But when the Rebels needed it the most, the point guard came through in a big way.
With a slim one-point lead and the clock winding down, Boudreaux drove the lane and dropped in a layup to give the Rebels a 49-46 advantage with 23 seconds remaining. He then pulled down a rebound on a last-second shot by the Bulldogs to preserve the victory.
“I told our guys that we needed to attack on the weak side of that 1-3-1 (defense) and he (Boudreaux) finally just penetrated and that was a huge bucket that we really needed,” said MHS coach William Stanley.
Boudreaux’s late bucket was one of only six shots that the Rebels hit from the floor in the second half.
In the final two frames, the Rebels went 1-for-8 from 3-point range and 5-for-17 from inside the arch.
“In the first half, we shot the ball pretty well, but in the second half, our open shots just weren’t falling,” said Stanley. “We just couldn’t get anything going. They (Elizabeth) were packing it in and our shots just weren’t falling.”
The Rebels and the Bulldogs went back and forth for the majority of the first half before the Rebels turned it on in the final two minutes of the second quarter.
Traven Guidry hit a shot in the lane with 2:14 remaining in the half to give the Rebels a 25-23 advantage. From there, Midland forced three turnovers and scored nine more points to take a comfortable 34-25 advantage at the break.
“Late in the second quarter, we threw (Dagan) Patin in there so we could run our press and we were able to get a few steals and make a run,” said Stanley.
That run was essential considering the Rebels went cold from the floor in the third quarter.
Elizabeth’s Tray Maddox scored six points in the third quarter and the Bulldogs outscored the Rebels 15-6 to tie the game heading into the final frame.
“In the third quarter, we just got beat on penetration,” said Stanley. “We were having to help and they would dish or just go in and hit the layup.”
The third quarter started out well for the Rebels when Devin Gautreaux drilled a 3-pointer from the corner. He followed with a jumper in the lane that put Midland up 45-40.
The Bulldogs answered with a 3-pointer from Collin McClellan before Patin hit a shot in the lane to push the lead to 47-43. EHS’ Colby Lafauci added a bucket and a free throw down the stretch to cut the lead to one (47-46) before Boudreaux put the game way with his driving layup.
Overall, Gautreaux led the Rebels with 13 points and Guidry had 10. Boudreaux followed with nine points; Patin had eight and Randy Primeaux had seven. Taatum Rubin, the Rebels’ leading rebounder with five boards, rounded out the scoring with two points.
Lafauci and Maddox paced the Bulldogs with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
