Pios top Mamou in summer league action
MAMOU – The Notre Dame Pioneers opened summer league play with a bang, sweeping a doubleheader with Mamou, 12-2 and 16-9.
In the first game, the Pios broke a 2-2 deadlock in the second inning by scoring five runs. The big inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Sam Hoffpauir and a three-run home run by Jacob Vicknair.
The Pios added four more runs in the following inning on a two-run single by Vicknair, who was 3-for-3 on the day, and a pair of hit batsmen with the bases loaded.
The Pios’ final run crossed the plate an inning later on a wild pitch.
Things didn’t get much better for the Green Demons in the varsity contest.
The Pios jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and continued to pile up runs in bunches through the next three frames.
Hoffpauir and Claiton Johnson each had two-run singles in the opening frame while Jarrod Owens added a run-scoring single.
Mamou answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame before Chase McBride doubled in the top of the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Faulk to give the Pios a 6-3 advantage.
Hoffpauir got the Pios going again in the third inning when he singled to start the frame. Joe Sonnier followed with an infield single and an errant throw allowed Hoffpauir to score. Johnson brought home Sonnier on a fielder’s choice before Owens eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Once again, Mamou answered.
After back-to-back walks to Tanner Rougeau and Toby Fontenot, Cory Bordelon delivered a two-run double to the gap in left center field. Then with two outs, Austin Jean Fontenot came through with an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-6.
The Pios broke the game wide open in the fourth with seven runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Doug Leonards, and five walks.
The Green Demons added their final three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run by Dylan Duplechain.
In all, the Pios had 13 hits on the day.
Hoffpauir led the charge with a 3-for-4 performance that included two RBI while Johnson had two hits and four RBI. Faulk and Owens each had two hits and two RBI; Leonards added a single and two RBI and McBride and Sonnier and Brennan Goss each had one hit. Pete Brown logged an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
