High winds, rain batter Acadia

Possible tornadic activity downs trees, cuts power

Howell Dennis

A strong thunderstorm system with high winds and pelting rain passed through Acadia Parish early Sunday morning leaving several downed trees, many residents without power, high water in some areas and downed a telephone pole which damaged the Chevron station at the corner of Oddfellows Rd. and Hwy. 1111. Tornado warnings were issued at 3:40 a.m. Sunday. Though details of any tornados could not be confirmed at 11 a.m. Sunday morning, a drive down I-10 showed a several downed pine trees lined symmetrically on each side of the interstate between Crowley and Rayne.
It appears that most of the damage was in the eastern part of the parish as several homes in the Duson area were surrounded by several inches of water.
There will be more details on Sunday morning's storm in our Tuesday edition.
